Watch: The first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s ‘Little Women’ is here

It’s hard to get the seal of approval when it comes to remakes, but if A Star is Born is anything to go by, when they are done right, they shine as fresh work for a new audience. Greta Gerwig’s starry-cast lead the way in the new trailer for the film, and with careful footing, it looks like she’s done something great.

At long last, the trailer for Greta Gerwig’s anticipated adaptation of Little Women has arrived — starring Saoirse Ronan as the punchy Jo March and Timothée Chalamet as a dreamy Laurie (is he ever not dreamy?) – the Lady Bird couple is on flying form once again.

“I loved that in Lady Bird, (Chalamet) was the one that broke my heart, but I got to break his heart in Little Women,” Ronan told Vanity Fair.

The trailer teases a sweeping, romantic take on the classic Louisa May Alcott novel. It’s a period film with modern, feminist sentiment as four headstrong women seek to find their way in the world.

“Women, they have minds and they have souls . . . I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for, I’m so sick of it!” Jo declares, in a very Jo March manner.

The teaser also features Emma Watson as Meg (a late but perfect addition to the cast after Emma Stone backed out due to scheduling conflicts), Eliza Scanlen as Beth, and Florence Pugh as Amy. Meryl Streep is the ideal Aunt March and Laura Dern rounds off the main cast as Marmee March.

It’s jovial with its emotional undercurrent just glimpsed at in the teaser – if a preview has such an impact, we have very high hopes for the film in its entirety.

Little Women will be in Irish cinemas on December 26
