Emily Ratajkowski: ‘I was battling serious depression… these notes might help you feel less alone’

Model Emily Ratajkowski shares a photo of her notebook, in which she details the things that helped her overcome depression

In a new post shared on Instagram, model Emily Ratajkowski opened up about her experience of depression. The 28-year-old, who was born in London but raised in San Diego, also shared a list of the lessons she’s learned that help her feel better. She hopes that by sharing her personal notebook on social media, she can help other people suffering from depression too.

“This pic was taken towards the end of last year,” the model began on Instagram. “2019 was one of the hardest years of my life. My mom was really sick, I was battling a serious depression and everything felt very uncertain. 2020 is definitely giving last year a run for its money but I’m happy to say that I’ve have learned how to take better care of myself.

“I don’t generally like to get too personal on here and I’m far from having sh*t figured out,” Emily continued, “but these were some of the notes I scribbled down on New Year’s Eve. I wanted to share them and a little piece of my story in case they might make any of you feel less alone in the anxiety or confusion or fear you could be experiencing right now.”

Emily Ratajkowski: ‘Things I learned in 2019’

– True satisfaction comes after quiet and patient hard work.

– You can’t control other people’s perceptions so do not let their perceptions dictate your life or who you are.

– Your feelings are always justified and should be honoured. That doesn’t mean they are real.

– The things that other people see as successes will not always be the same as the things that actually make you happy.

– Be curious about yourself and other people rather than judgemental.

– Loving means giving up control. This is how you can receive love, this is how you can give it.

– The world is completely unfair, but that’s no excuse.

– Telling your story is liberating.

– Never be afraid to ask questions. There is no such thing as dumb people vs smart people, just those who are willing to be curious and those who are not.

– No matter how much you love them, protecting people from how they’ve hurt you will always be at great cost to yourself.

– Patience is a beautiful meditation.

– Laughing at yourself is everything.

– Being truly present takes diligence and care.

– The people in your life who love you are a wonderful gift; treat them as such.

– Life goes by too quickly to be afraid of making mistakes.
