Beyoncé fans react to singer’s new ‘Homecoming’ film and album

Today’s the day Beyoncé fans have been waiting for: the singer is launching her very own film, Homecoming, on Netflix. What’s more, the star has also dropped a new album this week. As expected, the Beyhive are excited.

According to Netflix, Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé is an intimate, in-depth look at Beyoncé’s celebrated 2018 Coachella performance. The now-37-year-old headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival last year, with her performance receiving wide critical acclaim.

She was the first black woman to ever headline the music festival and her combination of dance, song and costume was said to be a celebration of both blackness and womanhood. Her two nights of performances were as much about history as they were history in the making. They were performances that launched a thousand think pieces.

Now, we get a backstage look at how the historic performances by Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter came to be, through Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé.

Netflix says it, “reveals the emotional road from creative concept to cultural movement”, while the New Yorker says it’s “an education in black expression”. Naturally, the singer’s super fans, collectively known as the Beyhive, are beside themselves.

Homecoming: Live album

As if her highly anticipated documentary wasn’t enough, Beyoncé also had a new album up her sleeve.

The album, also called Homecoming, had been hinted at online; with popular lyrics website Genius.com showing B7 listed under Beyoncé’s discography earlier today. They suggested it would be called B7, with an April 18 ‘expected’ release date. They weren’t far off.

Beyoncé’s new record contains live recordings of her 2018 Coachella performance; breaking more than two-hours of concert material into 40 tracks.

Fans react

As expected, Beyoncé fans are beyond excited. At Howard University (an American, historically black university founded in 1867), students queued for hours outside the auditorium in anticipation of the first screening.

Meanwhile, across social media, other members of the Beyhive have been posting about their excitement. Many of those in America couldn’t even face going to sleep. “If I wake up to a Beyoncé album I’d be so thankful,” one person tweeted, “#B7 let’s pray y’all”.
