Ten cable-knit jumpers that are too cosy to pass

Ten cable-knit jumpers that are too cosy to pass

Cable-knit jumpers are a time-honoured classic in the knitwear world. Knitwear, in general, provides a romantic narrative for the approaching cold season – toasty fires and hot chocolate – but it was Burberry, Area and Erdem who kickstarted AW18s burgeoning love-affair with the vintage-style jumper.

At Burberry, a heavy honey-comb-style patterned jumper was the ultimate surprise layered underneath a delicate floral and lace dinner-party dress, while marle-grey ostrich feathers accompanied a tight cable-knit design at Erdem. It really is about grandad knits for cocktail hour: heavily embellished sequin skirts, rhinestone chains, chandelier earrings, billowing sleeves, bedazzling shoes and a chunky-knit jumper.

It could be said that this trend is a celebration of Irishness. The cable-knit is, after all, a derivative of the Aran jumper (an Aran pattern was designed differently for each family). Indeed if we’re to follow the advice of designers, we won’t be shivering in our evening-wear come party season. Here are ten splendid cable knits to try first-hand.
