Meghan Markle’s power coats are perfect for transitional winter weather

She was a style icon as soon as she became associated with the royal family, but, in particular, it’s her outerwear selections — specifically the “Meghan Markle Power Coat”  that is an official sartorial subgenre. She has mastered the art of transitional dressing; perfect for this time of year when it’s cold but the arctic conditions haven’t quite hit.

And the secret to tackling in-between weather? Find a coat – as Markle has on numerous occasions – which won’t look out of season whatever the weather.

For some style inspiration while you’re still deciding on your winter option, here are 10 of the Duchess of Sussex’s best:

The Long Wrap, by Sentaler

Worn last year, Markle is a fan of this Canadian label, known for its simplicity and distinctive ribbed cuffs.

The Brando Coat, by Smythe

Worn in January 2018, this is an early example of what would become Markle’s signature “dressing gown silhouette” (as per The Telegraph). This low-key Canadian coat is classic Markle.

The Elodie, by Mackage

Worn to an event on World Aids Day in 2017, Markle wore another Canadian brand: a long navy double-breasted wool coat by Montreal-based outerwear label Mackage for one of her first royal outings.

The Tie-Detail Coat, by Stella McCartney

Worn during a walkabout of Cardiff Castle early last year, the Duchess opted for a timeless design by the British designer, also interpreted as a nod to both her new homeland and approval of McCarthy’s cruelty-free politics.

The Tipped Topcoat, by J.Crew

This one was worn during an International Women’s Day event, March 8, 2018. The choice of the classic American brand was befitting to the timely events that year.

The Double-Breasted Tartan by Burberry

Worn during her first visit to Scotland, this slouchy, menswear-inspired ensemble was proof that this was to be a member of the royal family with a distinctly laidback, effortless style.

The Sculpted Tailoring Crombie Coat, by Amanda Wakeley

Worn to the Commonwealth Day services at Westminster Abbey in March 2018,  this winter-white look stood out for more than just the coat. The jaunty cap, which royal watchers considered a tribute to Princess Diana, was the pièce de résistance.

The Navy Boucle Coat, by Sentaler

Worn to the Field of Remembrance at London’s Westminster Abbey this week,  Markle wears another coat from a favoured designer. “It is an honour to have the Duchess appear in Sentaler for such a meaningful occasion,” said the brand’s founder Bojana Sentaler. Interestingly, the wide-collar wrap coat has been named the ‘Meghan’ coat since the Duchess owns it in four different colours. This navy version, from the Fall/Winter 2015 collection, is one of her very first purchases from the Toronto-based brand.

The Mai, by Mackage

In March 2018, Meghan Markle visited Belfast, Northern Ireland wearing a belted coat by Canadian label Mackage. The maxi-length, straight-cut wool coat, featuring a waterfall collar and a belt-tie at the waist is everything that Markle has come to love in a coat.

The Meghan, by Line the Label

The one that started it all, worn during her official engagement announcement to Prince Harry.  Named after the Duchess, it garnered so much attention that the website for the previously unknown label was down for days.
