The expert’s easy tricks for glossy, smooth hair

Peter Mark’s longest-serving staff answer the big the questions: how do we achieve glossy, smooth hair?

The longest-serving staff at Peter Mark share their advice on creating glossy, smooth hair at home.

Peter Mark’s Long Service Awards recognised 75 employees who have worked at Peter Mark for 10 years or more. Collectively those 75 people honoured today have over 1,400 years of experience in the hairdressing industry ranging from stylists to support staff.

Patricia Mulcahy, Peter Mark Wilton, Cork, 40 years of service, joined in 1979

The best way to achieve smooth, glossy hair actually begins at home in the shower. Using the right shampoo and conditioner will give you a head start on taming our typically coarse Irish hair texture. You can follow this by using a heat protector such as REDKEN Pillow Proof Two Day Extender, €20  and then it’s all about the blowdry. Use a professional salon dryer on medium heat, full speed and keeping the airflow direction and brush motion going in the same direction – this will allow your hair’s cuticle layer to lie flatter, giving you that smooth, glossy, shiny finish.

Using the right tools and hair care is the best way to achieve and maintain smooth glossy locks. A good hair drier and nozzle, such as the ETI Turbo Stratus, €59.90 and a good brush will give you the perfect smooth blowdry. Homecare is very important in maintaining shine and condition and speaking to your stylist about homecare is vital. The Kérastase range is always a winner as there is a range to suit each and every hair type. In-salon treatments specified for your hair by your stylist can be a great way to help achieving smooth, glossy hair – adding a L’Oreal Professional Smartbond or a Kerastase Fusio Dose to your in-salon service will not go unnoticed.

To achieve smooth, glossy hair I would recommend the Kérastase Elixir Ultime range and Redken Frizz Dismiss to add shine and the L’Oreal Steampod, €199 which will leave your hair incredibly sleek shiny and, best of all, moisture and humidity resistant. Don’t forget – if you are going to straighten your hair, you must use a heat protector!
