Brown mascara will subtly change your entire make-up look. Here’s how.

Brown mascara will subtly change your entire make-up look. Here’s how.

Brown mascara probably isn’t in your everyday make-up rotation. Reaching for black is what you’ve likely always done — but is now the time to try on brown for size?

There are some occasions when black mascara is absolutely called for — and some where brown would not only just ‘do’, but would actually be preferable.

Trending

Brown mascara fell out of favour for a while, but it’s back thanks to the many make-up artists experimenting in online tutorials with the not-s0-obvious shades.

On Instagram, Patrick Ta makes the most of different colours to bring out the skin, eye and hair colour of his celebrity clients, including Gigi and Bella Hadid, Camila Cabello and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

When to go brown:

  1. If you’ve got brown eyes (or blue eyes! Or green…). Really, no matter what your eye colour, brown mascara will flatter.
  2. If you don’t want your eye make-up to be the focal point of your look— for instance, if you’re wearing a bright lip colour. Brown mascara is a more subtle way to define your eyes.
  3. If you want to softly define your lower lashes. Use black on the top and brown on the bottom for a hint of change — people will notice a difference but won’t know what that difference is.
  4. If you’re newly blonde. Black lashes and dark brows can jar with a freshly blonde head of hair. Opt for brown for the transition phase.
