John Lewis Christmas ad: speculation mounts ahead of its release

The John Lewis Christmas advert is expected to drop any day now – and some people are already convinced they know who’s in it

Some Christmas adverts have as big a following as hit Netflix series – and for good reason. Every festive season, brands such as M&S, Aldi and Guinness combine storytelling and music to create cinematic gold – but none more so than John Lewis.

Since 2007, the UK department store has released annual Christmas adverts to build excitement for its busiest time of year. Not only does John Lewis use emotive music (typically performed by a leading artist of the time), but it also portrays a strong theme – such as kindness, family ties or friendship.

The festive ads are known for tugging at the heartstrings, hence the huge anticipation ahead of their release.

John Lewis’s Christmas ad 2019

This year is no exception. A quick search of ‘John Lewis Christmas ad’ on Twitter will return dozens of results. Social media users are also speculating about which celebrity will perform the music, with most fingers pointing towards Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi.

The 23-year-old recently took the number one spot on the US charts with his song Someone You Loved, and as anyone who’s listened to him will know, his tone is perfect for a sentimental Christmas advert.

One person tweeted, “My daughter just pointed out that, as last year’s John Lewis Christmas ad was ‘Elton John Lewis’, then this year it should be ‘John Lewis Capaldi'”.

According to UK bookmakers Betway, she’s not far off (though odds are relatively high for Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith too). The bookies have drawn up the odds for this year’s ad as follows:

– Lewis Capaldi 2/5
– Ed Sheeran 9/4
– Sam Smith 4/1
– Lily Allen 7/1
– Elbow 8/1
– Tom Odell 10/1
– Jorja Smith 16/1

Considering the public were spot-on with last year’s Elton John prediction, they may be onto a winner again. And, given the ad is usually released between November 6-15, they won’t wait long to learn if they’re correct.
